RAIN HARVESTING DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND CONSULTATION

Rain water is the earth's primary source of fresh water. It is the earth's most abundant source of water and the cleanest source of water until it touches a surface. Rain water is normally neutral to slightly acidic which is beneficial to most plant life. The harvesting of Rain water is approved in the state of North Carolina by the Plumbing licensing board with conditions and right now in the sate of North Carolina By installing a rain water harvesting system in your home or business you are making an environmentally responsible and most of the time economically responsible decision. Go to the Database of State Incentives For Renewables and Efficiency

for a list of financial incentives to save energy and water.

Following are a list of applications for a rain water system:

  • Toilet flushing
  • Urinal Flushing
  • Irrigation
  • As a secondary water supply to Gray Water System
  • Fire sprinkler

We are certified installers of the BRAE rain water system.  Ask us about rain harvesting systems so that you can take advantage of free water! To see more of the types of rain harvesting systems we can install, go to http://www.braewater.com/.

GREY WATER SYSTEM DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND CONSULTATION

Grey Water: Any waste water generated in the home, except from toilets, is called gray water. Dish, shower, sink and laundry water comprise 50-80% of residential "wastewater". Grey water can be saved, filtered and used for flushing toilets. Please ask us about incorporating a grey water system into your existing plumbing system.

WHY USE GREY WATER?
Our fresh water supply is ever decreasing and we must reduce the amount of fresh water wasted. We can incorporate grey water systems into existing plumbing and help design most new systems. Treated grey water can be used to flush toilets and for irrigation in the state of NC. There are very specific rules and regulations to the use of grey water. Here is an excerpt from
the Untreated Gray Water in North Carolina is Wastewater/Sewage fact sheet:

"Gray water can be recycled for home use.
According to the 2006 N.C. Plumbing Code, treated household gray water may be permitted for use for specific
purposes if treated according to Code Standards. In Appendix C, Section C101.1 allows for recycled gray water to be
used for flushing of toilets that are located in the same building as the gray water recycling systems. These recycling
systems can also be used for irrigation purposes when approved by the authority having jurisdiction. Appendix C includes
information regarding the installation, filtration, disinfection, drainage and identification of gray water recycling systems.
Gray water used in a gray water recycling system must be filtered and disinfected before it can be recycled for
flushing of toilets or irrigation as stated in Appendix C."

For questions on the current Plumbing Code or gray water recycling systems, contact the N.C. Building Code Council at (919) 661-5880 or the N.C. Department of Insurance at (800) 546-5664. For more information about gray water, contact Dr. Barbara Hartley Grimes, Non-Point Source Pollution Program coordinator for the Division of Environmental Health, at (919) 715-0141 or by e-mail at
barbara.grimes@ncmail.net. You can also check with local plumbing inspectors, and obtain the proper permits, before installing a gray water recycling system.

We have installed the first approved grey water system in Buncombe County for one of our Customers, Demos Builders. The system installed was a BRAC system.

BIODIESEL VEHICLES
1. We use bio diesel provided by Blue Ridge BioFuels which is a cleaner burning fuel for diesel engines made from oils such as soy, canola and animal fats. The use of biodiesel reduces harmful emissions, supports local economy, reduces dependence on foreign oil, and extends the life of a diesel engine. Biodiesel is also biodegradable and is cleaner than diesel in every category.

PIPE, GLUES AND CLEANERS
We now offer PVC pipe with recycled content from Charlotte Pipe
http://tinyurl.com/34fafym
We use low V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Compound) glue, cleaner and primer on all PVC piping. We offer post consumer recycled content piping for all plumbing systems in the home such as copper and cast iron as alternatives to PVC pipe. PVC plastic  is believed to be a known carcinogen throughout its useful life.

IN THE OFFICE
  • We operate a Certified Green Office. You can become certified by going to greenlinepaper.com and filling out a 10 minute application.
  • In the office we email invoices, estimates and any other documents to reduce the amount of paper used as often as possible. We use at least 40% post consumer copy paper, fax paper, letterhead, and envelopes. All paper, cardboard, plastic, cans, and bottles are recycled. www.curbie.com
  • We request that our plumbing & gas material suppliers pack all goods in paper that can be recycled.

IN THE FIELD

Alternatives to PVC are offered such as Cast Iron outside the building and we offer copper as an alternative to PEX pipe and PVC inside the building.
As of now we are looking for PVC recyclers. If you have ideas on this subject please write a2zasheville@eatsleepplumb.com. All copper, brass, cast iron, lead, galvanized pipe, and other bi-metal products are recycled. All job site cardboard, paper, cans, bottles are recycled. Anything (we mean anything!) that can be reused will be.
